The Complete Donor FAQs for Nonprofits: 150+ Free Expert Answers on Retention, Stewardship & Major Gifts

If you work in nonprofit fundraising, you’ve almost certainly asked one of these — typed into a search bar or an AI assistant: “How do I get donors to give again?” or “How fast should I thank a donor?” or “Why do our donors keep lapsing?”

These aren’t beginner questions. They’re the ones every fundraiser — and every colleague who touches donor relationships — returns to again and again, especially as the ground keeps shifting. Retention rates hover below 45%. Acquisition costs climb every year. Economic uncertainty makes each renewal feel less certain than the last. Keeping the donors you already have has never mattered more, and chances are someone on your team is wrestling with exactly these questions right now.

We heard you. And we did something about it.

We’re proud to introduce The Complete Donor FAQs for Nonprofits — 150+ expert answers to the most-searched donor and fundraising questions in the nonprofit sector, all in one free, searchable resource.

A small taste of what’s inside

These are just 6 of the 150+ questions in the full resource, spanning three of the eight topic areas. If any of them sound like a question you — or someone on your team — asked this week, the full FAQ page has the rest.

How do I keep donors from lapsing?

What is the average donor retention rate for nonprofits?

Industry-wide donor retention sits at about 45% — meaning fewer than half of all donors give again the following year. For first-time donors it’s far worse: only about 19% ever give a second gift. The best-run organizations, by contrast, reach 70% or higher overall and 25–40% for new donors, so dramatic improvement is possible.

Why do donors stop giving?

Most donors leave for reasons the organization could have prevented. In a widely cited study, 54% said they could no longer afford to give — but nearly all the other causes, from poor communication to never being thanked to no information on how their gift was used, trace back to how the charity treated the donor.

How should I thank my donors?

From the Thanking Donors section — see all 27 questions →

How fast should I thank a donor after they give?

Get a thank-you acknowledgment in the mail within 24 hours of receiving the gift. Speed matters more than polish — a fast, simple thank-you outperforms a slow, elaborate one. If 24 hours isn’t achievable with your current systems, treat it as a goal and work down from a week to 72 hours to 48 to 24.

Do thank-you phone calls to donors make a difference?

A three-minute thank-you phone call boosts first-year donor retention by about 30%. Given that first-time retention sits around 19% industry-wide, that single practice could push it into the mid-20s. You don’t even need to reach the person — a warm voicemail counts.

If your executive director keeps asking why retention is flat, these two answers are the ones to forward.

How do I ask for a donation?

From the Asking for Donations section — see all 27 questions →

How effective is asking for a donation in person compared to mail or phone?

Asking in person is by far the most effective method — roughly 75% of face-to-face asks result in a gift, compared to about 25% of phone calls to existing supporters, and a far lower rate for direct mail. The reason is human: sitting across from someone builds empathy and attention no letter or email can match.

What words should I actually use to ask for a gift?

A simple, low-pressure phrasing works well: “Would you consider a gift of [amount]?” The word consider invites a real conversation rather than a yes-or-no verdict, and naming a specific amount gives the donor something concrete to respond to. Pair it with genuine listening afterward.
